There’s something magical about the bond between a mother and her daughter. While occasionally the relationship can sour and become almost antagonistic, it’s more often the case that you see knowledge literally transferring from one generation to the next. Through careful and thoughtful instruction, the daughter learns things that have been passed down since time immemorial.

It isn’t always big family treasures and secrets that are passed down, either. It’s the little things: brushing and braiding hair, canning salmon and baking cookies. It’s the long walks and the talks about boys. It’s digging clams together in the stillness of the night. It’s the womanly acknowledgement of starting menstruation. It’s the unsaid words that only women can understand and us men are left clueless.

It’s about shopping and going to “girly” movies together. It’s the sessions of hot cocoa or the tea parties with stuffed animals. It’s knowing and understanding that hearts will break and will mend. It’s sympathy for bloating and for mood swings....

As they age, the relationship reverses and the daughter starts to care for the mother. I was able to witness this firsthand as my mom began to care for her mom. There is something equally magical about the compassion of a daughter tending to her own mother’s needs. The mother is at once grateful and at the same time ashamed that it had to be like this. Such is the bond between a mother and a daughter.
