I can feel the wind flying over, under and all around my body. Sometimes I can look up into the sky and literally see eagles flying overhead. Distracted, I have to focus. Trees pass by me in a blur. I can feel the blood coursing through my veins, driven by the constant pump of my heart. Boom-boom. Boom-boom.

With only kilometres to go, I raise my speed incrementally: 47, 48, 49, 50 km/h. To me, these are merely numbers on the screen. The real measure of speed is the burden on my legs. I try to keep a rhythm: breathing and pedaling in a syncopated beat. My legs drive the pedals forward and around. Boom-boom. Boom-boom.

The finish line is in sight. I drive towards it, gasping for air. My lungs burn as they expand and contact. I think about my ancestors and the strength they must have had. A simple time trial is nothing in the scheme of things: 22 minutes. Boom-boom. Boom-boom.

Bliss! It’s over. I’ve finished another race against the clock. I look at my back wheel. It proudly displays one of my family’s main crests: the eagle. While I also sing traditional songs with a real drum, my bicycle wheel provides me with another way to sing a song. Boom-boom. Boom-boom.
