Flightpath

Giclee

Edition 99

Released April 2009

We take notice of them most when they’re honking overhead. Flying in giant V’s, we admire birds such as swans and geese. We are aware that these creatures are partaking in their yearly migration by traveling great distances. Other times, we notice the buzz of a hummingbird’s wings. Flying in and amongst the flowers, we admire the dazzling array of colours and are amazed by it’s ability to hover. “Flightpath” celebrates the migratory bird and was created to commemorate International Migratory Bird Day 2009.

In the centre of the image are two hummingbirds: the Green-throated Carib and the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. The former is found throughout much of the West Indies while the latter is very common throughout eastern and midwestern North America and yearly migrates south to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

The two species of large birds are the Trumpeter Swan and the Sandhill Crane. The Trumpeter Swan is North America’s largest native bird and is regarded as the largest waterfowl on earth. It is close to my heart as there is a very large winter population that calls the Comox Valley its home. The Sandhill Crane is found migrating to marshes throughout much of North America. The two breeds of ducks are the Blue-winged Teal and the Red-breasted Merganser. Both are found on waters and wetlands throughout this continent.

The last two bird species are the Common Tern and the Peregrine Falcon. The Common Tern is the most widespread tern in North America. It winters in South America. The Peregrine Falcon is a very fast migrating raptor that travels as much as 25,000 km per year. It is found on all continents except Antarctica.

"Flightpath” is a limited edition print using the giclée method of printmaking. This print was released in April of 2009 and printed by Andy Everson at the artist’s own studio in Comox B.C.
