It is hard to express just how important stories are to us. They
allow us to recollect and recount events and encounters throughout
our lives. They enable us to be transported through time and space
to look at different historical periods or geographical regions.
Stories can at the same time give hope, spread fear, provide knowledge
and present joy. Stories and storytelling is a uniquely
human experience.
For First Nations along the Pacific Northwest, raven has often
figured prominently in our storytelling. He is often seen as a
trickster and a mischievous little fellow. He is also regarded
as the bringer of the day—the one who released the sun from
the confines of a box. In many ways, he is the embodiment of the
story on the coast as he is the subject of and the teller of many
stories. True to the character of raven, he is portrayed here tirelessly
squawking to the moon telling his favourite stories.
This year I had the privilege of working with prominent author
David Bouchard on his new book, I am Raven. Through creative
collaboration, I was able to use my artwork to bring elements of
his story to life. I enjoyed this process and am ecstatic with
the results. This image graces the cover of the book. In many ways,
the raven here is David—full of energy and always
willing to share a few of his stories to all who will listen. I’m
sure on a many nights, when there is no one around, he has shared
these same stories with the moon.
